I talk about it a lot, including in this post, where I discuss the strangeness of this game hitting at the height of Mario mania in the United States, with all the tie-in merchandise capitalizing on the SMB2 version of Mario, turnip in hand. Looking at the development timelines, it seems perfectly understandable that not only did the extra time pay off aesthetically but also the SMB2 sprites seem like improved versions of their SMB3 counterparts, rather than entirely new sprites. I suppose some people might disagree, but I feel like it’s hard to argue that the SMB2 pixels don’t look better than the ones in SMB3. The SMB2 version of Toad seems like an original sprite, unrelated to anything in SMB3, and we can’t do a comparison for Luigi because SMB2 is the only 8-bit Mario platformer where he’s given a unique sprite. Again, it’s only two white pixels added to her eyes, but it makes a remarkable difference: With just pink to suggest her eyes, she either looks possessed or high. I recall reading about a connection between Mario’s sprites in SMB2 and SMB3, with one being based off the other in some kind of observable way. Sure, graphics can be revised and updated as a game moves through production, but I’m going to present some evidence that suggests Nintendo had already finalized Peach’s look for the ending of SMB3 - and then, while turning Doki Doki Panic into a Mario game for the west, used that pre-existing SMB3 sprite. Based on the way game production works, it’s possible a lot of the graphics design for SMB2 were desigend after similar work had been done for SMB3. Meanwhile, Doki Doki Panic was released on July 10, 1987, and the game it became - SMB2 - hit American shelves on October 9, 1988, less than a month before Japanese gamers were getting their hands on SMB3. Production on SMB3 began in 1986, not long after the game we westerners call The Lost Levels was released, and it hit shelves in Japan on October 23, 1988. 2, and not the other way around, despite their release date order. 3 influenced what Peach would look like in Super Mario Bros. Note: You need to record the "Rise" information for each roof segment, working from the bottom-up, for input when you create your Roof Planes. Select CAD> Dimension> Manual Dimension, and draw dimensions working upward from the wall top.Repeat this process for all of the intersections.Next, select CAD> Lines> Draw Line and draw horizontal lines to the right from the intersection points of the "Run" grid and the "Arc".Using the Select Objects tool, select the "Ridge" line and use the End Handle on the left to drag it from left to right to shorten it, making sure to snap it to the center of the Arc.Now you are ready to create your "Rise" grid. Your Cross Section/Elevation View should now look like the image below. Click OK to perform the action and close the dialog.Since your "Run" distance will always be 12", you don't need to record this information. Check Move and set the "Y" Delta - Move Distance to negative (minus) -12".Place a checkmark next to Copy, then set the number of copies to 22.Next, use the Select Objects tool to select the "Grid" line on the left, then click on the Transform/Replicate edit tool from the Edit Toolbar.Select the triangular edit handle located in the arc itself, then drag the Arc up the screen and snap it to the "Ridge" line.Using the Select Objects tool, select the "Wall Top / Chord" CAD line, then click on the Change Line/Arc edit tool.Your plan should now look like the image below. The actual roof "Ridge" height will be approximately 96" plus the "Vertical Rafter Depth" of the first Roof Plane. This line will represent the underside of the rafter framing at the "Ridge". Extend the two "Grid" lines to the new "Ridge" height line.You will use this dimension to set the Ridge Height to 8' (or 96"). Now, select CAD> Dimensions> End to End Dimension, and create a dimension line between the lines representing the " Ridge Height" and the "Wall Top / Chord".Next, use the menu to select CAD> Lines> Draw Line and draw a new horizontal cad line at some distance above the original horizontal CAD line.First, use the Select Objects tool to select the horizontal CAD line and use its Move edit handle to drag it down to flush with the top of the walls.Now that you have started your plan, created a Cross Section/Elevation view, and drawn in your reference lines, you are ready to begin setting up the grid. You have yet to determine the roof ridgeline height and the Arc Radius for your barrel roof. You know that the Chord of the Arc will be 26' (or 312"). Your Cross Section/Elevation View should now be similar to that displayed below. Ultimately, this line will become the Arc itself. This will be used to represent the Wall Top Height and the Chord of the Arc you will create to model your barrel roof. With the Draw Line tool still active, draw a new line horizontally, above the walls and between the two vertical lines.These will represent the framing width of the structure, and will be used later in creation of your Rise/Run Grid. Select CAD> Lines> Draw Line, then draw two lines vertically on the outside of the framing layer of each of the side walls.Next, select 3D> Delete Surface to completely remove the wall layers throughout the plan.Note: The camera angle is important for understanding X, Y, and Z coordinates, which you will need later to help automate your grid creation. ![]() |
